Back at the hotel, Agent Evans got himself a room. I knew it meant being careful about seeing Noah again, but I needed to rule out Sasha’s DNA from the crime scene. She was hiding something, but I didn’t think she was a murderer. Besides, she was tiny—five feet tall and maybe a hundred pounds, soaking wet. It would be difficult for her to carry out Adam’s brutal murder, but not impossible.

Eric lounged on my bed, his presence unnerving me and fueling a simmering anger within. “What’s the next move, boss?”

“You should go back to Memphis, Eric. I’ve got this covered.”

A smug grin crept across his face, as if he possessed some extraordinary understanding of my inner thoughts. I’d reached my limit with his suffocating ways. “I know why you want me gone.”

“So I can breathe?” I said the words and regretted them immediately. He was a nuisance, but he was still my partner.

“Ouch.”

I took my fingers off the computer keyboard and sighed. “You didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry. What were you going to say?”

His face was solemn and I was kicking myself for being so selfish and blunt. “I was going to say, you want me gone so you can go to Adam Carol’s funeral alone and see Noah Hart.”

I took a deep breath. “Well you’ve got part of it right.”

“I knew it!” he shouted. “There’s something going on between you two. I haven’t quite put my finger on it because you’re not usually into guys like him.”

“Like what?” Eric had managed to get an apology out of me, but almost immediately I wanted to retract it.

“I dunno…something.”

“I was going to say before I was so rudely interrupted, I do want to go to Adam Carol’s funeral––alone.”

“Why?”

“Because if we both go, it looks like we’re doing more than paying our respects.”

“Because we are, Lou. You know as well as I do, killers love to show up at their victim’s funerals. It gives them a cheap thrill.”

“Contrary to your belief, Eric, I am highly versed in Homicide 101. The question is why aren’t you? I’m going and you’re not. Issue resolved. Case closed. Pack up your things and head back to Memphis.”

“I might not go to the funeral, but I’m not leaving Nashville, Lou. I’m on this detail, just like you. The case is here.”

I picked up my suit jacket and the keys to my car. Holding the door for Eric, I waited for him to leave.

“What?”

“Look Eric, you don’t have to go home—but you’ve got to get the hell up outta here.”

Eric got off the bed and walked to the door, kissing me on the cheek. “This won’t last, Lou. You know once we’re in the home office you’ll be calling me for a visit to your bedroom.”

I was so angry at his comment, I couldn’t look at him. I wanted him out of my head and my life, but mostly out of my room so I could leave. When he walked away, I counted the key cards to my room.
